    U-17 Pioneer Boys.

The Pioneers had a great start to the season. They played in the Reebok Challenge in Pearland Texas.

The Pioneers beat teams from Dallas, Houston, Louisiana, and Michigan. Pioneers won their pool and made it through the super elite bracket championship. Where they lost to a very good team from Louisiana.

Coach Baskett felt his team got better and more comfortable around each other every game. Coach Baskett also feels they can beat the team they played in the championship, if the Pioneers get to play them again.

There were a lot of college coaches in attendance and have already been calling about Ecba players. It was a great showing for the players and the Academy.

U-17 Pioneers are off to Las Vegas this weekend to play in the double pump event. They will be playing some of the best teams in the west coast, so wish them well.

  • Congratulations to Zach Gordon for Signing at Cal Poly

Third-year head coach Joe Callero strengthened an already deep incoming frontcourt following Monday's announcement that 6-8 forward Zach Gordon (Lynwood, Wash. / Archbishop Murphy HS) has inked a National Letter of Intent with the anticipation of joining the Mustang men's basketball program for the 2012-13 season.

As a senior at Archbishop Murphy HS (Everett, Wash.), Gordon averaged 13.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game during his 2011-12 senior season to earn All-Cascade Conference second team praise. As a junior during the 2010-11 term, Gordon averaged 9.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per outing in helping Archbishop Murphy to a 15-7 overall record and, with a 12-2 league mark, a share of the Cascade Conference championship.

Gordon's signing brings Cal Poly's number of incoming players measuring 6-7 or better to four future Mustangs. Set to join Gordon inside Mott Gym this fall are 6-9 Brian Bennett (Romeoville, Ill. / Plainfield East HS), 6-8 Josh Hall (Brush Prarie, Wash. / St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) and 6-7 Zach Allmon (San Luis Obispo, Calif. / Mission College Prep).

"Zach (Gordon) has the athletic ability and energy to help us immediately next season," said Callero, who guided the 2011-12 Mustangs to 18 victories, a figure that ranks as the second-highest total in 18 Division I seasons. "His academic profile and work ethic are a perfect fit and will compliment our other three fall signings. He can play the four or five spot and is highly competitive. Zach is a real sleeper and a steal. Due to a knee injury last summer, he was not available during the summer evaluation period. However, his late season play this past winter gave us great confidence in his potential."

Gordon joins a Mustang squad that finished the 2011-12 campaign as one of the NCAA's top-ranked defensive programs. En route to reaching the semifinal round of the Big West Conference Tournament for the first time in five seasons, the Mustangs finished the year ranked sixth among Division I programs in opponent rebounds per game (29.1), 24th in opponent points per game (60.5) and 28th in rebounding margin (plus-5.5). Among Big West programs, Cal Poly also finished second in opponent three-point percentage (33.5).

Also one of the more efficient programs in Division I, the Mustangs ranked 12th nationally with just 10.6 turnovers committed per game and 37th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.19-to-1).

Cal Poly's defensive prowess and overall efficiency helped forge a 10-4 home record that featured the program's highest win total inside Mott Gym in five years. The Mustangs, who allowed just 58.4 points per home game this past season, won their final five games in Mott Gym to secure the No. 4 seed for the Big West Tournament and clinch a second-successive top-half finish in the conference standings for the first time in five years.

In support of Cal Poly's winning ways, the program has experienced a 42.5 percent increase in attendance between the 2008-09 campaign (the final season prior to Callero's central coast arrival) and last season's average of 2,242 fans per home contest.
